Desert Knowledge Institute

Current knowledge and practice in adaptation to life in the desert is mostly research oriented and led by a small number of research institutions and universities around the world. This research is not widely available to the general public, decision makers or professionals in an accessible way.

The Israeli Desert Knowledge Institute will bridge this gap between the knowledge generated by continuous scientific desert research efforts and the lack of public engagement of the scientific community through an online digital library and face-to- face workshops offered throughout the year to professionals, college students, eco-tourists, decision makers and the general public.

As the world’s population continues to grow, the food, water and other natural resources on which we depend on become more scarce, particularly for the poorest populations among us. This is caused by the combination of human overpopulation and climate change, and in arid regions this turns natural resources like productive, arable land into desert. As this trend continues, humanity will have to learn to adapt to life in desert conditions. With the right knowledge base, they will not just learn to live, but prosper in these conditions.
